The Bahamas just became the first nation that not only launched its own Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) but also fully implemented it. As of right now, the citizens of the Bahamas, all 393,000 of them, have access to the Sand Dollar – that is how the nation’s CBDC was named.

The plans for the Sand Dollar have been in motion for years, apparently. Back In 2019 a pilot campaign for it issued 48,000 Sand Dollars on two islands – Exuma and Abaco.

This digital currency can now be used in any store, and can be transferred through a mobile app, which is connected with a e-Wallet that has been approved by the Bahamian Central Bank. The fees for now are said to be “negligible”.

It is pretty impressive that they managed to do this. I hope it has been properly tested before launch.
