The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed at 36,275.12, up 0.2% from the previous day's close. The S&P 500 index closed at 4,249.27, up 0.1%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed at 14,073.90, down 0.2%.
In individual stock news, Apple (AAPL) saw a slight gain of 0.3%, while Microsoft (MSFT) rose 0.5%. Amazon (AMZN), on the other hand, saw a decline of 0.7%.
Some of the day's biggest gainers included telecom company Verizon Communications (VZ), which rose 2.2%, and pharmaceutical company Merck (MRK), which gained 1.8%. On the flip side, oil and gas company Chevron (CVX) saw the biggest decline of the day, falling 2.4%.
