Best Trail Stop Loss Strategy

Whats the best way to Trail your profits without stopping out soon. For example if I use 50points on Gold, I make near to nothing. The trail stop usual break even or give me a few dollars.

Manual works but we usually miss out, like when there are major announcements which may cause volatility
