does the backtesting resemble the real results?

Backtesting can be misleading for a whole host of reasons. Data snooping biases, survivorship bias, etc.

But for me the biggest problem with backtesting is that you are generally testing some entry conditions and exit conditions.
 
Back testing is trying to see how your trading works, is without fear but real goes with fear so the difference of back testing and real is mostly fear

Backtesting is the only way to verify under which past conditions a startegy worked. alternatively, you can use a demo account to verify rates of success of a strategy b4 using a real account
 
you use backtesyting to test the quality of your strategy. Laternatively u can use a demo account to test under real market conditions
