it completely depends on your strategy, there is no right answer to that question.
When I trade manually I mostly have 2 positions open on the same pair and I don't focus on more then 6 pairs at a time.
In comparison, my Robot opens 5 to 18 trades, depending on market situation, on each of the 16 pairs it works on.
